Gates of Olympus is Pragmatic Play‘s Greek-myth slot from February 2021, played on a 6×5 grid that pays anywhere instead of on paylines. Zeus throws multiplier symbols worth up to 500x onto the reels, wins tumble away to make room for new ones, and the free spins round keeps a running multiplier total.
This Gates of Olympus slot review follows what actually happens on a spin: how wins form, how the multipliers add up, what each symbol pays and where the 5,000x cap comes in. Every game figure (paytable, RTP, features and the cap) comes from Pragmatic’s own in-game rules, read on 22 October 2026.
Short answer: it is a pay-anywhere tumble slot where 8 or more matching symbols win and multiplier symbols do the heavy lifting. Pragmatic sets the RTP at 96.50% and labels it medium volatility, though many reviewers class it as high. Wins stop at 5,000x your bet. Try the free demo on this page with play money before deciding whether it suits you.

How to Play Gates of Olympus
-
Step 1
Open the game in the free demo on this page or at a licensed casino, and tap the info button to check the RTP and rules for that version.
-
Step 2
Set your stake with the plus and minus buttons. Where offered, decide whether to switch on the Ante Bet, which adds 25% to the stake.
-
Step 3
Press spin. Any 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on the grid pay, then disappear so new symbols can fall in and possibly win again.
-
Step 4
Watch for the coloured multiplier symbols. When the tumbles stop, their values are added together and applied to the total win of that sequence.
-
Step 5
Land 4 or more Zeus scatters for 15 free spins. In the round, 3 or more scatters add 5 spins and winning multipliers join a running total.
How the Gates of Olympus Slot Works, Spin by Spin
Three rules interact on every spin: pay-anywhere wins, tumbles and multipliers. Once you see the order they run in, the rest follows.
The 6x5 grid: no paylines, no wild
The screen shows six reels of five symbols, 30 positions in all. Pragmatic’s rules say symbols pay anywhere, and the total number of the same symbol on screen at the end of a spin decides the win.
You need at least 8 matching symbols for a payout, and the paytable steps up at 10 and at 12 or more. Position does not matter: 8 hourglasses spread across all six reels pay the same as 8 bunched together.
There is no wild symbol. Some review sites quote 18 or 20 paylines, or a 6×4 grid, but the studio’s rules describe a 6×5 pay-anywhere screen, which is what the demo shows.
Tumbles (cascading reels): one paid spin, several wins
After every spin, winning symbols are paid and removed. The rest drop down, new symbols fall in from above, and if that creates another win the process repeats. Pragmatic states there is no limit to the number of tumbles.
Wins from the whole sequence reach your balance only after the last tumble. That matters because the multipliers act on the sequence total, not on each separate win.
Multiplier symbols in the base game
Four winged orb symbols, in green, blue, purple and red, can land on any reel during spins and tumbles, in the base game and in free spins. Each takes a random value: 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x or 500x.
In the base game, when the tumbles end, the values of every multiplier on screen are added together and the sequence’s total win is multiplied by that sum. A 5x and a 10x give 15x, not 50x. Orbs that land on a losing spin pay nothing.
A worked example at a โฌ1 bet
An illustrative sequence using the official paytable; it shows the order of events, not a typical result.
- The spin lands 8 crowns: 10x the bet, so โฌ10.
- The crowns vanish, new symbols fall and 8 blue gems connect: 0.25x, so โฌ0.25.
- A 5x and a 10x multiplier are on screen when the tumbles stop: 15x in total.
- The sequence total of โฌ10.25 is multiplied by 15, so the spin pays โฌ153.75.
Most spins lose, and many winning sequences carry no multiplier at all.
The top regular symbol pays 50x (six Zeus scatters pay 100x), so wins of hundreds or thousands of times your bet depend largely on multipliers landing in a winning sequence. That is the real engine of this game.
— FAQsino Games DeskGates of Olympus Symbols and Paytable Explained
The full Gates of Olympus paytable is in the Symbols & Paytable table on this page. Values are multiples of your bet with the Ante Bet off; Pragmatic’s rules say wins are multiplied by the base bet, so the Ante top-up does not raise payouts.
Five gems are the low symbols. Blue, green, yellow, purple and red gems pay 0.25x to 1x for 8 or 9 of a kind. They land often and keep tumble chains going, but rarely return the stake on their own.
Four treasures are the high symbols. The chalice, ring, hourglass and crown pay more, and the crown is the top-paying regular symbol: 10x for 8 or 9, 25x for 10 or 11, and 50x for 12 or more.
The jump to 12+ is steep for the gems: a red gem goes from 1.5x to 10x. Big counts of one gem matter more than mixed small wins.
What the Zeus symbol does
Zeus is the scatter. He can appear on all six reels and pays wherever he lands: 3x the bet for 4, 5x for 5 and 100x for 6. Four or more also trigger free spins, so that spin pays and starts the feature at once. The multiplier orbs are the only other special symbols, and they pay nothing by themselves.
Free Spins, Ante Bet and Bonus Buy
Beyond tumbles and multipliers, there is one bonus round and two paid options that change how you reach it.
How the free spins are triggered
Gates of Olympus free spins start when 4 or more Zeus scatters land in one spin. The round opens with 15 free spins, and Pragmatic notes that special reels are used during the feature; it does not publish them.
Landing 3 or more scatters in the round adds 5 more spins. No retrigger limit is stated, but each adds 5 spins rather than another 15, so “unlimited free spins” claims on some sites overstate it.
The running multiplier during free spins
Whenever a multiplier symbol lands and the spin produces a win, its value joins a total multiplier that stays in place for the rest of the round.
The detail many reviews skip: under Pragmatic’s rules, the total is applied to a later win only when a new multiplier symbol lands in that winning sequence. A winning spin with no fresh multiplier pays at face value. A late spin with a fresh orb and a good win, though, draws on everything collected before it.
Ante Bet: the double-chance option
The Ante Bet raises your stake by 25%: in the demo, a โฌ2.00 bet becomes โฌ2.50. Pragmatic’s rules say more scatters are placed on the reels, doubling the chance of triggering free spins naturally.
Payouts stay based on the base bet, the RTP stays at 96.50%, and Buy Free Spins is disabled while it is on. You pay more for more frequent bonus rounds, not higher pays.
Gates of Olympus bonus buy
Where offered, Buy Free Spins starts the bonus round from the base game for 100x your current base bet. At a โฌ1 bet that is โฌ100 for one round, which can return less than it cost. Pragmatic lists the RTP when buying as 96.50%.
According to Racing Post, neither the bonus buy nor the Ante Bet is available to UK players. We found no studio or regulator statement on this, so check the game screen at your casino, and count any buy inside a fixed budget.
| Feature | Trigger | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Tumble | Any win | Winners vanish, new symbols fall; repeats until no new win |
| Multiplier symbol | Random, any reel | 2x to 500x; base game values are added and applied when the sequence ends |
| Free spins | 4+ Zeus scatters | 15 spins with a running total multiplier |
| Retrigger | 3+ scatters in the round | 5 extra free spins |
| Ante Bet | Optional, +25% stake | More scatters, double chance of free spins; Buy disabled |
| Buy Free Spins | 100x base bet, where offered | Starts the free spins round straight away |
| Max win cap | 5,000x the bet | Round ends and the win is paid up to the cap |
Gates of Olympus RTP, Volatility and Max Win
Two of these numbers are clear-cut in Pragmatic’s own material; the volatility label is where the studio and many reviewers part company.
The Gates of Olympus RTP percentage
The default Gates of Olympus RTP percentage is 96.50%. It appears on Pragmatic’s official game page and in the in-game rules, which state the same figure with the Ante Bet on and when buying free spins.
RTP, or return to player, is a theoretical long-run average over many spins. It does not predict a session, which can lose far more than 3.5% of your stakes or win well above it.
Slot databases report that operators can run lower-RTP versions. Pragmatic publishes no list of them and the quoted figures disagree, so we do not repeat them. Before playing for real money, check the Gates of Olympus slot RTP shown in the game’s info pages at your casino.
| Mode | RTP | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|
| Standard play | 96.50% | Official game page and in-game rules |
| Ante Bet on | 96.50% | In-game rules |
| Buy Free Spins | 96.50% | In-game rules |
| Operator versions | May be lower | Check the in-game rules at your casino |
Gates of Olympus slot volatility: medium or high?
Pragmatic’s rules label the game medium volatility, describing such games as paying steadily with pays ranging from low to very high. We use that label in the quick facts.
Many reviewers disagree. SlotCatalog, Racing Post and gambling.com rate it high, and 2021 launch coverage called it highly volatile. Their reasoning: gem wins often return less than the stake, while big results depend on multipliers that land unpredictably, so long quiet spells and sudden spikes are both normal. Plan for those wider swings whatever the label says.
Gates of Olympus max win and max win chance
The Gates of Olympus max win is 5,000x the bet, and it is a hard cap. Pragmatic’s rules say that once a round’s total win reaches 5,000x, the round ends at once, the win is paid up to the cap and any remaining features, including unplayed free spins, are forfeited. There is no progressive jackpot; the cap is a fixed multiple of your bet.
In principle one sequence can reach it: 12 or more crowns at 50x with a 100x multiplier total is exactly 5,000x. Pragmatic does not say how the cap is usually reached, but a free spins round is the more obvious route, since its multiplier total keeps building.
The Gates of Olympus max win chance is not published by Pragmatic. Precise probabilities quoted elsewhere could not be traced to the studio.
Gates of Olympus Max Bet, Minimum Bet and UK Rules
The minimum bet is โฌ0.20 per spin. For the maximum, the studio’s demo rules list โฌ300 in the euro configuration, but casinos set their own limits by currency and market, so treat your casino’s bet menu as the final word.
In Great Britain, the UK Gambling Commission’s stake-limit guidance caps online slots at ยฃ5 per spin (per game cycle, including any Ante top-up) for players aged 25 and over, and ยฃ2 for those aged 18 to 24, whatever the game’s own range. Our UK Gambling Commission review covers the wider rules.
| Where / who | Maximum stake per spin | In force since |
|---|---|---|
| GB sites (UKGC licence), age 25+ | ยฃ5 | 9 April 2025 |
| GB sites (UKGC licence), age 18 to 24 | ยฃ2 | 21 May 2025 |

Autoplay, turbo and paid features in the UK
Under a UKGC package of game-design changes in force since 31 October 2021, UK online slots cannot offer autoplay, spins faster than 2.5 seconds or features that speed up play. The turbo and quick-spin settings below therefore belong to non-UK versions, and Racing Post reports that the Ante Bet and Buy Free Spins are not offered in the UK either.
Game Settings and Controls
The controls follow Pragmatic’s standard layout, as described in the game’s help pages:
- Bet menu: plus and minus buttons set the stake; the Ante Bet toggle and Buy Free Spins button appear on the main screen where the version allows them.
- Spin speed: one button cycles through normal, quick spin and turbo spin, and holding the space bar gives turbo. UK versions must not offer quick or turbo spins.
- Autoplay: runs automatic spins, with an option to skip feature screens. Not available on UK sites.
- Settings menu: turns the intro screen, ambient music and sound effects on or off, and opens your game history.
- Keyboard: on desktop, Space or Enter starts and stops a spin.
- Information: seven pages of rules, including the paytable, RTP and max win rule.
Gates of Olympus Theme: Zeus and Mount Olympus
The Gates of Olympus theme comes straight from Greek mythology. Pragmatic’s game page invites you to join Zeus, king of the gods in Greek myth, and the art places you among marble columns, flaming braziers and a temple above the clouds. Zeus stands beside the reels with his lightning and doubles as the scatter.
The Gates of Olympus background is Mount Olympus itself. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, it is Greece’s highest mountain, at about 2,917 metres, on the border of Macedonia and Thessaly.
In myth it was the home of the gods and the seat of Zeus’s throne, and the principal gods, the twelve Olympians, take their name from it. It became Greece’s first national park in 1938.
Playing on Mobile
The game is built in HTML5 and runs in a mobile or desktop browser with no download. Pragmatic supplies it to casinos, so playing the Gates of Olympus slot online on a phone means opening it through a casino’s mobile site or app rather than a separate game app. Our mobile casinos guide covers what to look for.
Gates of Olympus Demo and Free Play
You can play Gates of Olympus online for free in the Demo Play panel at the top of this page. The Gates of Olympus demo uses play money: credits have no cash value and cannot be withdrawn.
Gates of Olympus demo play runs the studio’s unrestricted configuration, so it can show the Ante Bet, Buy Free Spins, autoplay and turbo even where your casino’s version does not. Short demo sessions also say little about how real-money play will go.
Gates of Olympus free play is meant for adults only, and UK-licensed casinos must verify your age before offering free play on their own sites.
Gates of Olympus Real Money Play: Choosing a Casino
If you play the Gates of Olympus slot game for real money, the casino matters more than the game: the operator’s licence, RTP setting and terms vary. When choosing a Gates of Olympus casino, check four things:
- Licence: the casino should be licensed where you live, such as by the UK Gambling Commission for British players.
- RTP version: open the game’s info pages and confirm the RTP shown, ideally 96.50%.
- Payout terms: withdrawal limits and any wagering on bonuses and free spins offers that include this game.
- Safer-gambling tools: deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion that are easy to find.
The Real Play button on this page lists casinos that offer this game or other Pragmatic Play games, filtered for your country. You can also compare operators in our casino reviews.
Is there a strategy that wins?
No. Every spin is decided by a random number generator, and no bet size, timing, Ante Bet or bonus buy changes the RTP or the odds. Ignore anyone selling a system.
What you can control is how you play: set a budget and time limit first, pick a stake that gives the game room to reach its features, and stop when the budget is gone rather than chasing losses. Gambling is for over-18s only; our responsible gambling page lists tools and free support.
Gates of Olympus crypto play: the facts
This is a standard RNG slot from a studio that supplies licensed operators, not a “provably fair” crypto game, and it plays the same whether a casino takes cards or cryptocurrency. Whether you can use crypto depends on the casino and the rules where you live, and not every licensed casino accepts it. Crypto values can move sharply, adding risk on top of the game. This is not financial advice, and FAQsino recommends no crypto operator.
Awards and Reception
Pragmatic Play’s Gates of Olympus won Game of the Year at the EGR Operator Awards in December 2021, as reported by AGBrief, and Slot of the Year at the CasinoBeats Game Developer Awards 2022, according to organiser SBC. At the 1000 sequel’s launch in December 2023, Pragmatic’s COO called the original one of the studio’s most popular and successful slots.
SlotCatalog’s main criticism is familiarity: the engine is close to Pragmatic’s earlier Sweet Bonanza.
Series, Spin-offs and New Releases
The original’s success led Pragmatic Play to build a family of Gates of Olympus slots. These are separate games with their own reviews to come.
| Title | Released | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus 1000 | December 2023 | Multipliers up to 1,000x; 15,000x max win |
| Gates of Olympus Xmas 1000 | December 2024 | Christmas edition; 15,000x max win |
| Gates of Olympus Super Scatter | 28 April 2025 | Super Scatter symbol with prizes from 100x up to 50,000x; 50,000x max win |
| Gates of Olympus 2500 | 28 September 2026 (scheduled, per Rotowire) | Multipliers up to 2,500x and a wheel that picks the free spins type |
The 1000 version keeps the original’s 96.50% RTP and 100x buy, according to its official page, and trade coverage reports the same 15 free spins; the bigger multiplier range is the headline change. The Gates of Olympus Super Scatter edition adds a symbol that can award large instant prizes alongside the bonus trigger.
For anyone looking for new Gates of Olympus games, the most recent entry we found is the 2500 edition. Trade coverage also lists a POP edition and a roulette game, with details that differ by source, so check our Pragmatic Play games list as those reviews are added.

Our Verdict on the Gates of Olympus Slot
The game earns its reputation with a simple idea done well: pay-anywhere tumbles, multipliers that add up, and a free spins round where the total keeps growing. The rules are transparent, the RTP is the same in every mode Pragmatic offers, and the paytable is easy to read.
The trade-offs are real. The 5,000x cap is modest beside the 1000 and Super Scatter editions, operators may run lower-RTP versions, and free-spin multipliers only pay out when a fresh orb lands in a win. Try the demo first and decide with play money.
What we could not verify
- An official list of lower-RTP versions and which casinos use them.
- The odds of hitting the max win, and the hit frequency; Pragmatic publishes neither.
- A studio or regulator statement on Ante Bet and Buy Free Spins in the UK (we rely on Racing Post).
- A release date from Pragmatic itself; February 2021 comes from launch press coverage.
- The reel strips used during free spins.
