Who Is ELK Studios? Owner, History and Team

ELK Studios trades through two companies. ELKAB Studios AB, a Swedish company, holds the UK Gambling Commission licence and, according to ELK, two Romanian licences. ELK Studios Malta Ltd holds the Malta Gaming Authority licence. Every source we checked places the studio in Stockholm, and its careers page describes a team of more than 100 people.

Robin Smith is quoted as CEO in ELK’s own news post of November 2025. Its chief product officer, Fredrik Lindberg, spoke to Bigwinboard about Pirots 4 shortly before its July 2025 launch. Older ELK news quotes Filip Säfbeck as CEO in 2018; the site names no other current executives.

On 1 December 2021 Scientific Games announced that it had acquired ELK and did not disclose the terms. Its annual report for 2021 confirms the deal (“In December of 2021, we acquired ELK Studios”). The buyer said ELK would keep developing games independently while using its resources, with the aim of reaching more players in the US and Canada.

Scientific Games has since renamed itself Light & Wonder. ELK’s own website names no parent company, and we found no 2025 or 2026 filing that names ELK, so we describe the ownership as it was confirmed in 2021. A March 2026 trade release about a South African launch still called ELK a Light & Wonder studio.

ELK Studios Games: What the Catalogue Includes

Every title on ELK’s games page is an online slot. We counted 158 entries on the official games page, including variants such as Pirots 4 Inferno and Pirots 4 Frozen Fury, so “more than 150 titles” is the fair figure. These ELK Studios online slots range from 6×6 CollectR grids to three-reel classics such as Ivanhoe and In the Zone.

If you are looking for ELK Studios casino games beyond slots, we found none: no table games, live dealer games or crash games in the list. The ELK Studios slot games fall into recognisable series: Pirots, Wild Toro, Cygnus, Nitropolis, Tropicool, Oxygen and the Gold series featuring the adventurer Kane Steele. That series began in 2019, and ELK revived it with Elysian Gold in 2025 after billing Valhall Gold (2023) as its final chapter.

• No progressive jackpots: we found fixed jackpots in Cygnus 3 and Joker Gems, but no progressive or networked jackpot on any ELK page.
• No Megaways: the word appears on none of the 158 game pages. ELK uses its own ways systems, such as Nitro Reels and Bigways.
• Feature buys: yes, through X-iter, explained below.

Signature Mechanics: CollectR, Nitro Reels, Bigways and More

CollectR powers the Pirots series. Instead of paying along lines, birds move across the grid and collect matching gems, and clearing space can expand the grid and trigger features. It has spread to other titles, including Huff N’ Puff CollectR, Spark of Creation and Concrete Cowboys in 2026.

Nitro Reels drive the Nitropolis series, where reels of different heights create huge ways counts: the original Nitropolis sheet lists 85,155,840 ways. Bigways, introduced with In the Zone in April 2025, stops each reel on 2, 3 or 6 symbols for 8 to 44 ways to win.

Wild Toro 3 adds day and night volatility modes: its sheet rates day mode 6 of 10 and night mode 8 of 10. Pirots 4 brought what ELK calls an industry-first time-based countdown inside the game.

ELK Compete lets casinos run multiplayer tournaments and individual challenges as an overlay on any ELK game, choosing the game, minimum bet and tournament length. A promotion can be open to everyone or limited to invited players. If your casino runs one, read its rules for the eligible games, the minimum stake and the dates before you join.

X-iter Explained: ELK Studios' Feature-Buy System

X-iter is ELK’s own way of letting you skip the base game. Each slot that has it offers up to five modes, priced as a multiple of your bet. ELK describes the modes as anything from guaranteed base-game features to spins with growing multipliers or straight entry to a bonus. The cheapest modes, usually called Bonus Hunt, raise your chance of triggering the bonus. The dearest usually buy the super bonus outright.

X-iter first appeared in Bompers, which ELK’s own page calls the first slot with X-iter modes. Trade coverage from February 2021 put its launch at 2 March 2021, with five modes priced at 25x to 300x the bet. The official game pages now show cheapest modes from 2x and top modes up to 500x, so the range has widened since launch.

ELK does not use the phrase “bonus buy” for X-iter, but that is what the top modes are: you pay a fixed price for a feature. Its page for Katmandu Gold calls that game the first slot with the “ELK Buy Bonus feature”. These are the prices on the pages and sheets we checked:

Betting Strategies: Read the Small Print

Older ELK product sheets for Ivanhoe and Wild Toro say all ELK games came with four Betting Strategies (The Lab, which introduced them, lists three). They change your stake automatically and can be switched off after any spin. The Ivanhoe sheet sets out the rules:

• Optimizer sets the bet at 1% to 10% of your balance.
• Jumper raises the bet one step after every win, up to four levels above the base bet, and resets after a loss.
• Booster raises it one step after every loss, up to four levels above the base bet, and resets after a win.
• Leveller raises it two steps after five losing rounds in a row, and again after each further five, and resets after a win.

Raising your stake after losses is a form of chasing losses, and no pattern changes the odds of the next spin. We could not confirm which current games or markets still offer these tools. If you see them, our advice is to leave Booster and Leveller switched off.

Best ELK Studios Slots: 10 Titles Compared

ELK publishes no official ranking, so we picked these ten for what we can check: they come from the studio’s best-known series (Pirots, Wild Toro, Cygnus, Nitropolis, Katmandu), they include the award winners, and each has a full official sheet. Because we found only slots in its catalogue, the best ELK Studios games and the best slots are one list.

ELK Studios Pirots 3 and the Pirots Series

ELK Studios Pirots 3 shows why the series works. Four pirate birds land on a 6×7 grid in a Wild West setting and collect gems, with an expanding grid, symbol upgrades and transformations, wilds, a coin game, a bonus and a super bonus, all within a 10,000x cap. Duelling gunslinger birds, a train heist and an escaping bandit are the features.

The official sheet gives 94.0% RTP, volatility 8 of 10 and a 25.2% hit frequency. Its X-iter modes run from a 3x bet up to a 500x Super Bonus, according to the game page. ELK’s news dates the launch to 25 June 2024; some review sites give other dates.

The series began with Pirots in March 2023 on a 5×5 grid. Pirots 2 moved to 6×6 and won the 2024 CasinoBeats award. Pirots X switched to cluster pays in October 2024. Pirots 4 added the time-based countdown in July 2025, and Pirots 5 followed in July 2026 as the first in the series whose sheet shows an 87.0–96.0% range.

Wild Toro ELK Studios Series: From Wild Toro to Wild Toro 3

The Wild Toro ELK Studios series pits Toro the bull against a matador in a Spanish town. The original, launched in November 2016, is a 5×4 slot with 178 paylines, walking wilds, the Matador Respin Challenge and the Toro Goes Wild bonus game. Its game data sheet gives 96.4% RTP, volatility 6 of 10, a 24.9% hit frequency and a 2,250x maximum. ELK says it ran 17 million test spins before release.

It is a bullfight slot, not a Wild West game, and it has no Megaways, whatever some sites claim. Wild Toro II (October 2021) raised the cap to 10,000x at 95.0% RTP. Wild Toro 3 (May 2026) adds sticky Torito wilds that expand the reels, charged matadors and the day and night modes, with a 25,000x cap and an RTP range of 87.0–96.0%.

Some review sites list a single 94% or 96% figure for Wild Toro 3; ELK’s own sheet shows a range, so those sites are probably showing one of several versions.

Ivanhoe and The Lab: Two ELK Studios Classics

Players searching for Ivanhoe ELK Studios or The Lab ELK Studios are looking at the studio’s early catalogue, and few sites have the official data. The Lab was ELK’s first slot, launched in October 2014; Ivanhoe followed in April 2017. Both product sheets are still on ELK’s site, but The Lab no longer appears on its main games list, so few casinos may still offer it.

Ivanhoe is a three-reel slot based on Sir Walter Scott’s novel, with a retro dot-matrix display and a five-level bonus game with rising multipliers. The sheet stresses one-handed play in portrait mode and says a perfect base-game hit pays up to 510x in a single spin.

The Lab is a five-reel slot with crystal and chemical-element symbols. Landing the Lab symbol adds two extra spinning reels. In free spins every win is doubled and the Lab symbol turns wild, and X Scatters can double or quadruple a win. Its sheet presents it as the launch of ELK’s Betting Strategies.

Highest RTP ELK Studios Slots: The 96% Classics

Four ELK slots are listed at 96.4% on their official game-data sheets: Wild Toro, Poltava, Taco Brothers Saving Christmas and Ho Ho Tower. They are older games, so check the RTP in the game rules at your casino before you play. Two of them, Taco Brothers Saving Christmas and Ho Ho Tower, are rated just 4 of 10 for volatility, far gentler than the 8 of 10 typical of the newer 50,000x titles.

ELK Studios Series: Pirots, Wild Toro, Cygnus and Nitropolis

When Scientific Games bought ELK in 2021, it named Wild Toro II, Katmandu and Cygnus as hit titles. Most of the catalogue now sits in long-running series, each with its own mechanic. Katmandu X, a cluster-pays game, is the most volatile slot in our best-of table, at 9 of 10.

Highest Max Win ELK Studios Slots: The 50,000x Club

ELK’s own game pages describe a 50,000x potential on Buffalo Toro, Nightmaker, Cygnus 2, Cygnus 4, Cygnus 5, Cygnus 6, Nitropolis 4, Nitropolis 5 and Grizzly Stampede. That is the highest cap we found on ELK’s site. A max win is a theoretical ceiling reached on very rare spins, and these high-cap games are among the most volatile, so read the figure as a volatility signal rather than a target.

New ELK Studios Slots: 2025 and 2026 Releases

ELK announced 24 new games in 2025 and 20 between January and mid-October 2026, roughly two a month. The table lists the releases with the clearest official data. ELK Studios RTP: Three Eras on the Official Sheets

RTP (return to player) is the share of all stakes a slot is designed to pay back over millions of spins. ELK publishes it on a product sheet for each game, which is more than many studios do. Reading the sheets side by side shows three distinct eras:

Volatility and Hit Frequency: What ELK Tells You

ELK also rates volatility on a scale of 10 and, on most sheets, gives a hit frequency: the share of spins that return any win. Ivanhoe hits on 16.0% of spins at volatility 9 of 10, while Electric Sam hits on 40.5% at 2 of 10. Most of the 2025–26 sheets we read fall between about 23% and 30%.

A “hit” includes wins smaller than your stake, so a 25% hit frequency does not mean you profit on one spin in four. At £1 a spin, 100 spins on a 96.0% version have a theoretical cost of about £4; on an 87.0% version, about £13. High volatility means real results swing far more widely than that. Every spin is independent, so a game is never “due” a win.

ELK Studios Mobile: Built for Portrait Play

Mobile is where ELK started. Its older product sheets carry the slogan “Mobile First!” and say all ELK games can be played on desktop as well as mobile. The Lab’s sheet says the game client detects your device and adjusts the presentation, using web technologies including canvas and WebGL.

The Ivanhoe sheet describes three presentation modes. Portrait mode keeps navigation on vertical movement and thumb reach, so every function works one-handed. Landscape mode, which you get by turning the phone, uses horizontal navigation, and desktop mode adjusts the visuals for a larger screen. The sheet adds that icons stay the same across the modes and that Auto Spin options may differ because of local regulations.

When Scientific Games bought ELK in 2021, it also singled out the studio’s mobile-first focus. For a mobile ELK Studios casino, the experience still depends on the operator’s own site or app, and we have not run device tests. Try a demo on your phone first and check the stake range in the game.

Is ELK Studios Safe? Reputation and Awards

ELK’s record looks clean in the sources we checked. The UKGC register lists no regulatory action. Our searches for fines, sanctions or lawsuits involving ELK found none, and reports on Sweden’s fines against suppliers that served unlicensed casinos did not mention ELK. Those searches were not exhaustive, and we did not review the MGA’s enforcement notices or court records, so this is not a guarantee.

The main player criticism we found is about RTP: some reviewers note that 94%, the figure on most recent sheets, sits below the 96% many players use as a benchmark. The 2026 ranges sharpen that point, because the sheets now allow versions as low as 87.0%.

• Whether and where X-iter is switched off, and the RTP of each X-iter mode.
• Which lab certified each 2025–26 release. Older data sheets name Trisigma and GLI, but the new one-page sheets name none.
• Register entries for Romania, Ontario, Greece and the US states.

Our Verdict on ELK Studios

ELK Studios is one of the more inventive slot makers in regulated casinos. ELK Studios games such as Pirots, Wild Toro and Cygnus have real identity, the release pace holds at about two games a month, and its UK and Malta licences check out on the registers. Few studios publish as much maths per game.

The trade-off is value. Most recent sheets show 94.0%, the 2026 range allows versions down to 87.0%, and X-iter modes up to 500x the bet can empty a balance quickly. Learn a game in demo mode, check the RTP in the rules at your casino, set a deposit limit first, and treat any feature buy as part of your budget, not a way out of a losing run.
